           Tothetheatreaccordinglytheyallwent;noTilneysappearedtoplagueorpleaseher;shefearedthat,amongstthemanyperfectionsofthefamily,afondnessforplayswasnottoberanked;butperhapsitwasbecausetheywerehabituatedtothefinerperformancesoftheLondonstage,whichsheknew,onIsabella’sauthority,renderedeverythingelseofthekind“quitehorrid.”Shewasnotdeceivedinherownexpectationofpleasure;thecomedysowellsuspendedhercarethatnoone,observingherduringthefirstfouracts,wouldhavesupposedshehadanywretchednessabouther.Onthebeginningofthefifth,however,thesuddenviewofMr.HenryTilneyandhisfather,joiningapartyintheoppositebox,recalledhertoanxietyanddistress.Thestagecouldnolongerexcitegenuinemerriment—nolongerkeepherwholeattention.Everyotherlookuponanaveragewasdirectedtowardstheoppositebox;and,forthespaceoftwoentirescenes,didshethuswatchHenryTilney,withoutbeingonceabletocatchhiseye.Nolongercouldhebesuspectedofindifferenceforaplay;hisnoticewasneverwithdrawnfromthestageduringtwowholescenes.Atlength,however,hedidlooktowardsher,andhebowed—butsuchabow!Nosmile,nocontinuedobservanceattendedit;hiseyeswereimmediatelyreturnedtotheirformerdirection.Catherinewasrestlesslymiserable;shecouldalmosthaverunroundtotheboxinwhichhesatandforcedhimtohearherexplanation.
