           ShefeltalmostpersuadedthatMissTilneywasathome,andtoomuchoffendedtoadmither;andassheretireddownthestreet,couldnotwithholdoneglanceatthedrawing-roomwindows,inexpectationofseeingherthere,butnooneappearedatthem.Atthebottomofthestreet,however,shelookedbackagain,andthen,notatawindow,butissuingfromthedoor,shesawMissTilneyherself.Shewasfollowedbyagentleman,whomCatherinebelievedtobeherfather,andtheyturneduptowardsEdgar’sBuildings.Catherine,indeepmortification,proceededonherway.Shecouldalmostbeangryherselfatsuchangryincivility;butshecheckedtheresentfulsensation;sherememberedherownignorance.Sheknewnothowsuchanoffenceashersmightbeclassedbythelawsofworldlypoliteness,towhatadegreeofunforgivingnessitmightwithproprietylead,nortowhatrigoursofrudenessinreturnitmightjustlymakeheramenable.

           Dejectedandhumbled,shehadevensomethoughtsofnotgoingwiththeotherstothetheatrethatnight;butitmustbeconfessedthattheywerenotoflongcontinuance,forshesoonrecollected,inthefirstplace,thatshewaswithoutanyexcuseforstayingathome;and,inthesecond,thatitwasaplayshewantedverymuchtosee.
