           Whenhegavehispromisetohisfather,hemeditatedwithinhimselftoincreasethefortunesofhissistersbythepresentofathousandpoundsa-piece.Hethenreallythoughthimselfequaltoit.Theprospectoffourthousanda-year,inadditiontohispresentincome,besidestheremaininghalfofhisownmother’sfortune,warmedhisheart,andmadehimfeelcapableofgenerosity.—"Yes,hewouldgivethemthreethousandpounds:itwouldbeliberalandhandsome!Itwouldbeenoughtomakethemcompletelyeasy.Threethousandpounds!hecouldsparesoconsiderableasumwithlittleinconvenience."—Hethoughtofitalldaylong,andformanydayssuccessively,andhedidnotrepent.

           Nosoonerwashisfather’sfuneralover,thanMrs.JohnDashwood,withoutsendinganynoticeofherintentiontohermother-in-law,arrivedwithherchildandtheirattendants.Noonecoulddisputeherrighttocome;thehousewasherhusband’sfromthemomentofhisfather’sdecease;buttheindelicacyofherconductwassomuchthegreater,andtoawomaninMrs.Dashwood’ssituation,withonlycommonfeelings,musthavebeenhighlyunpleasing;—butinHERmindtherewasasenseofhonorsokeen,agenerositysoromantic,thatanyoffenceofthekind,bywhomsoevergivenorreceived,wastoherasourceofimmovabledisgust.
