           DashwoodandherdaughtersweremetatthedoorofthehousebySirJohn,whowelcomedthemtoBartonParkwithunaffectedsincerity;andasheattendedthemtothedrawingroomrepeatedtotheyoungladiestheconcernwhichthesamesubjecthaddrawnfromhimthedaybefore,atbeingunabletogetanysmartyoungmentomeetthem.Theywouldsee,hesaid,onlyonegentlemantherebesideshimself;aparticularfriendwhowasstayingatthepark,butwhowasneitherveryyoungnorverygay.Hehopedtheywouldallexcusethesmallnessoftheparty,andcouldassurethemitshouldneverhappensoagain.Hehadbeentoseveralfamiliesthatmorninginhopesofprocuringsomeadditiontotheirnumber,butitwasmoonlightandeverybodywasfullofengagements.LuckilyLadyMiddleton’smotherhadarrivedatBartonwithinthelasthour,andasshewasaverycheerfulagreeablewoman,hehopedtheyoungladieswouldnotfinditsoverydullastheymightimagine.Theyoungladies,aswellastheirmother,wereperfectlysatisfiedwithhavingtwoentirestrangersoftheparty,andwishedfornomore.

           Mrs.Jennings,LadyMiddleton’smother,wasagood-humoured,merry,fat,elderlywoman,whotalkedagreatdeal,seemedveryhappy,andrathervulgar.Shewasfullofjokesandlaughter,andbeforedinnerwasoverhadsaidmanywittythingsonthesubjectofloversandhusbands;hopedtheyhadnotlefttheirheartsbehindtheminSussex,andpretendedtoseethemblushwhethertheydidornot.
