           Elinorhadjustbeencongratulatingherself,inthemidstofherperplexity,thathoweverdifficultitmightbetoexpressherselfproperlybyletter,itwasatleastpreferabletogivingtheinformationbywordofmouth,whenhervisitorentered,toforceheruponthisgreatestexertionofall.Herastonishmentandconfusionwereverygreatonhissosuddenappearance.Shehadnotseenhimbeforesincehisengagementbecamepublic,andthereforenotsincehisknowinghertobeacquaintedwithit;which,withtheconsciousnessofwhatshehadbeenthinkingof,andwhatshehadtotellhim,madeherfeelparticularlyuncomfortableforsomeminutes.Hetoowasmuchdistressed;andtheysatdowntogetherinamostpromisingstateofembarrassment.—Whetherhehadaskedherpardonforhisintrusiononfirstcomingintotheroom,hecouldnotrecollect;butdeterminingtobeonthesafeside,hemadehisapologyinformassoonashecouldsayanything,aftertakingachair.
