           EdwardseemedasecondWilloughby;andacknowledgingasElinordid,thatsheHADlovedhimmostsincerely,couldshefeellessthanherself!AsforLucySteele,sheconsideredhersototallyunamiable,soabsolutelyincapableofattachingasensibleman,thatshecouldnotbepersuadedatfirsttobelieve,andafterwardstopardon,anyformeraffectionofEdwardforher.Shewouldnotevenadmitittohavebeennatural;andElinorlefthertobeconvincedthatitwasso,bythatwhichonlycouldconvinceher,abetterknowledgeofmankind.

           Herfirstcommunicationhadreachednofartherthantostatethefactoftheengagement,andthelengthoftimeithadexisted.—Marianne’sfeelingshadthenbrokenin,andputanendtoallregularityofdetail;andforsometimeallthatcouldbedonewastosootheherdistress,lessenheralarms,andcombatherresentment.Thefirstquestiononherside,whichledtofartherparticulars,was,—

           "Howlonghasthisbeenknowntoyou,Elinor?hashewrittentoyou?"

           "Ihaveknownitthesefourmonths.WhenLucyfirstcametoBartonParklastNovember,shetoldmeinconfidenceofherengagement."

           Atthesewords,Marianne’seyesexpressedtheastonishmentwhichherlipscouldnotutter.Afterapauseofwonder,sheexclaimed—

           "Fourmonths!—Haveyouknownofthisfourmonths?"

           Elinorconfirmedit.

           "What!—whileattendingmeinallmymisery,hasthisbeenonyourheart?—AndIhavereproachedyouforbeinghappy!"—

           "ItwasnotfitthatyoushouldthenknowhowmuchIwasthereverse!"

           "Fourmonths!"—criedMarianneagain.
