           Palmer’s,itwasproposedbythelatterthattheyshouldallaccompanyhertosomeshopswhereshehadbusinessthatmorning,towhichMrs.JenningsandElinorreadilyconsented,ashavinglikewisesomepurchasestomakethemselves;andMarianne,thoughdecliningitatfirstwasinducedtogolikewise.

           Wherevertheywent,shewasevidentlyalwaysonthewatch.InBondStreetespecially,wheremuchoftheirbusinesslay,hereyeswereinconstantinquiry;andinwhatevershopthepartywereengaged,hermindwasequallyabstractedfromeverythingactuallybeforethem,fromallthatinterestedandoccupiedtheothers.Restlessanddissatisfiedeverywhere,hersistercouldneverobtainheropinionofanyarticleofpurchase,howeveritmightequallyconcernthemboth:shereceivednopleasurefromanything;wasonlyimpatienttobeathomeagain,andcouldwithdifficultygovernhervexationatthetediousnessofMrs.Palmer,whoseeyewascaughtbyeverythingpretty,expensive,ornew;whowaswildtobuyall,coulddetermineonnone,anddawdledawayhertimeinraptureandindecision.

           Itwaslateinthemorningbeforetheyreturnedhome;andnosoonerhadtheyenteredthehousethanMariannefleweagerlyupstairs,andwhenElinorfollowed,shefoundherturningfromthetablewithasorrowfulcountenance,whichdeclaredthatnoWilloughbyhadbeenthere.

           "Hasnoletterbeenlefthereformesincewewentout?"saidshetothefootmanwhothenenteredwiththeparcels.Shewasansweredinthenegative."Areyouquitesureofit?"shereplied.
