           Whatotherreasonforthedisclosureoftheaffaircouldtherebe,butthatElinormightbeinformedbyitofLucy’ssuperiorclaimsonEdward,andbetaughttoavoidhiminfuture?Shehadlittledifficultyinunderstandingthusmuchofherrival’sintentions,andwhileshewasfirmlyresolvedtoactbyheraseveryprincipleofhonourandhonestydirected,tocombatherownaffectionforEdwardandtoseehimaslittleaspossible;shecouldnotdenyherselfthecomfortofendeavouringtoconvinceLucythatherheartwasunwounded.Andasshecouldnowhavenothingmorepainfultohearonthesubjectthanhadalreadybeentold,shedidnotmistrustherownabilityofgoingthrougharepetitionofparticularswithcomposure.

           Butitwasnotimmediatelythatanopportunityofdoingsocouldbecommanded,thoughLucywasaswelldisposedasherselftotakeadvantageofanythatoccurred;fortheweatherwasnotoftenfineenoughtoallowoftheirjoininginawalk,wheretheymightmosteasilyseparatethemselvesfromtheothers;andthoughtheymetatleasteveryothereveningeitherattheparkorcottage,andchieflyattheformer,theycouldnotbesupposedtomeetforthesakeofconversation.SuchathoughtwouldneverentereitherSirJohnorLadyMiddleton’shead;andthereforeverylittleleisurewasevergivenforageneralchat,andnoneatallforparticulardiscourse.Theymetforthesakeofeating,drinking,andlaughingtogether,playingatcards,orconsequences,oranyothergamethatwassufficientlynoisy.
