           HewastheonlypersonintheworldwhocouldatthatmomentbeforgivenfornotbeingWilloughby;theonlyonewhocouldhavegainedasmilefromher;butshedispersedhertearstosmileonHIM,andinhersister’shappinessforgotforatimeherowndisappointment.

           Hedismounted,andgivinghishorsetohisservant,walkedbackwiththemtoBarton,whitherhewaspurposelycomingtovisitthem.

           Hewaswelcomedbythemallwithgreatcordiality,butespeciallybyMarianne,whoshowedmorewarmthofregardinherreceptionofhimthanevenElinorherself.ToMarianne,indeed,themeetingbetweenEdwardandhersisterwasbutacontinuationofthatunaccountablecoldnesswhichshehadoftenobservedatNorlandintheirmutualbehaviour.OnEdward’sside,moreparticularly,therewasadeficiencyofallthataloveroughttolookandsayonsuchanoccasion.Hewasconfused,seemedscarcelysensibleofpleasureinseeingthem,lookedneitherrapturousnorgay,saidlittlebutwhatwasforcedfromhimbyquestions,anddistinguishedElinorbynomarkofaffection.
