           “MagicisinherjustasitisinDickon,”saidColin.“Itmakesherthinkofwaystodothings—nicethings.SheisaMagicperson.Tellherwearegrateful,Dickon—extremelygrateful.”

           Hewasgiventousingrathergrown-upphrasesattimes.Heenjoyedthem.Helikedthissomuchthatheimproveduponit.

           “Tellhershehasbeenmostbounteousandourgratitudeisextreme.”

           Andthenforgettinghisgrandeurhefelltoandstuffedhimselfwithbunsanddrankmilkoutofthepailincopiousdraughtsinthemannerofanyhungrylittleboywhohadbeentakingunusualexerciseandbreathinginmoorlandairandwhosebreakfastwasmorethantwohoursbehindhim.

           Thiswasthebeginningofmanyagreeableincidentsofthesamekind.TheyactuallyawoketothefactthatasMrs.Sowerbyhadfourteenpeopletoprovidefoodforshemightnothaveenoughtosatisfytwoextraappetiteseveryday.
