“Yes,itwill,”saidRosa;“butnevermind.Yourtulipismydaughter.IshalldevotetoitthesametimeasIshouldtoachildofmine,ifIwereamother.Onlybybecomingitsmother,”Rosaadded,smilingly,“canIceasetobeitsrival.”
“MykindandprettyRosa!”mutteredCorneliuscastingonheraglanceinwhichtherewasmuchmoreoftheloverthanofthegardener,andwhichaffordedRosasomeconsolation.
Then,afterasilenceofsomemoments,duringwhichCorneliushadgraspedthroughtheopeningsofthegratingfortherecedinghandofRosa,hesaid,—
“Doyoumeantosaythatthebulbhasnowbeeninthegroundforsixdays?”
“Yes,sixdays,MynheerCornelius,”sheanswered.
“Anditdoesnotyetshowleaf?”
“No,butIthinkitwillto-morrow.
