           Hemadenoanswerbutagrunt.Thelingeringtracesofthepoisonseemedtomakehimoddlyirritable.

           “Whatdoyoumeantodo?”

           “HowshouldIknowwhattodo?”

           “Oh,verywell!”saidI,andbecamesilent.Presently,Iwasrousedfromastupor.“OLord!”Icried;“Iwishyou’dstopthatbuzzing!”

           Welapsedintosilenceagain,listeningtothedullconfusionofnoiseslikethemuffledsoundsofastreetorfactorythatfilledourears.Icouldmakenothingofit,mymindpursuedfirstonerhythmandthenanother,andquestioneditinvain.ButafteralongtimeIbecameawareofanewandsharperelement,notminglingwiththerestbutstandingout,asitwere,againstthatcloudybackgroundofsound.Itwasaseriesofrelativelyverylittledefinitesounds,tappingsandrubbings,likealoosesprayofivyagainstawindoworabirdmovingaboutuponabox.Welistenedandpeeredaboutus,butthedarknesswasavelvetpall.
