Whenatlastwehadmadeanendofeating,theSeleniteslinkedourhandscloselytogetheragain,andthenuntwistedthechainsaboutourfeetandreboundthem,soastogiveusalimitedfreedomofmovement.Thentheyunfastenedthechainsaboutourwaists.Todoallthistheyhadtohandleusfreely,andeverandagainoneoftheirqueerheadscamedownclosetomyface,orasofttentacle-handtouchedmyheadorneck.Idon’trememberthatIwasafraidthenorrepelledbytheirproximity.Ithinkthatourincurableanthropomorphismmadeusimaginetherewerehumanheadsinsidetheirmasks.Theskin,likeeverythingelse,lookedbluish,butthatwasonaccountofthelight;anditwashardandshiny,quiteinthebeetle-wingfashion,notsoft,ormoist,orhairy,asavertebratedanimal’swouldbe.Alongthecrestoftheheadwasalowridgeofwhitishspinesrunningfrombacktofront,andamuchlargerridgecurvedoneithersideovertheeyes.TheSelenitewhountiedmeusedhismouthtohelphishands.
