Chapter 9 — Prospecting Begins

           WithaguardedeffortIraisedmyselftothetop,andmovingascautiouslyasarheumaticpatient,stoodupbesidehimundertheblazeofthesun.Thespherelaybehindusonitsdwindlingsnowdriftthirtyfeetaway.

           Asfarastheeyecouldseeovertheenormousdisorderofrocksthatformedthecraterfloor,thesamebristlingscrubthatsurroundeduswasstartingintolife,diversifiedhereandtherebybulgingmassesofacactusform,andscarletandpurplelichensthatgrewsofasttheyseemedtocrawlovertherocks.Thewholeareaofthecraterseemedtomethentobeonesimilarwildernessuptotheveryfootofthesurroundingcliff.

           Thiscliffwasapparentlybareofvegetationsaveatitsbase,andwithbuttressesandterracesandplatformsthatdidnotverygreatlyattractourattentionatthetime.Itwasmanymilesawayfromusineverydirection;weseemedtobealmostatthecentreofthecrater,andwesawitthroughacertainhazinessthatdrovebeforethewind.Fortherewasevenawindnowinthethinair,aswiftyetweakwindthatchilledexceedinglybutexertedlittlepressure.Itwasblowingroundthecrater,asitseemed,tothehotilluminatedsidefromthefoggydarknessunderthesunwardwall.Itwasdifficulttolookintothiseastwardfog;wehadtopeerwithhalf-closedeyesbeneaththeshadeofourhands,becauseofthefierceintensityofthemotionlesssun.

           “Itseemstobedeserted,”saidCavor,“absolutelydesolate.”

           Ilookedaboutmeagain.
