           Thetransparentblacknessoftheglassbehindhimmadehimseemasthoughhefloatedinavoid.

           “Well,we’recommitted,”Isaidatlast.

           “Yes,”hesaid,“we’recommitted.”

           “Don’tmove,”heexclaimed,atsomesuggestionofagesture.“Letyourmuscleskeepquitelax—asifyouwereinbed.Weareinalittleuniverseofourown.Lookatthosethings!”

           Hepointedtotheloosecasesandbundlesthathadbeenlyingontheblanketsinthebottomofthesphere.Iwasastonishedtoseethattheywerefloatingnownearlyafootfromthesphericalwall.ThenIsawfromhisshadowthatCavorwasnolongerleaningagainsttheglass.Ithrustoutmyhandbehindme,andfoundthatItoowassuspendedinspace,clearoftheglass.

           Ididnotcryoutnorgesticulate,butfearcameuponme.Itwaslikebeingheldandliftedbysomething—youknownotwhat.Themeretouchofmyhandagainsttheglassmovedmerapidly.Iunderstoodwhathadhappened,butthatdidnotpreventmybeingafraid.Wewerecutofffromallexteriorgravitation,onlytheattractionofobjectswithinourspherehadeffect.Consequentlyeverythingthatwasnotfixedtotheglasswasfalling—slowlybecauseoftheslightnessofourmasses—towardsthecentreofgravityofourlittleworld,whichseemedtobesomewhereaboutthemiddleofthesphere,butrathernearertomyselfthanCavor,onaccountofmygreaterweight.

           “Wemustturnround,”saidCavor,“andfloatbacktoback,withthethingsbetweenus.”
