           “We’regoingtosee.”

           “Arewe?”Isaid,andstaredbeforeme.

           “Youaretired,”heremarked.“You’dbettertakeawalkthisafternoon.”

           “No,”Isaidobstinately;“I’mgoingtofinishthisbrickwork.”

           AndIdid,andinsuredmyselfanightofinsomnia.Idon’tthinkIhaveeverhadsuchanight.Ihadsomebadtimesbeforemybusinesscollapse,buttheveryworstofthosewassweetslumbercomparedtothisinfinityofachingwakefulness.Iwassuddenlyinthemostenormousfunkatthethingweweregoingtodo.

           Idonotrememberbeforethatnightthinkingatalloftheriskswewererunning.NowtheycamelikethatarrayofspectresthatoncebeleagueredPrague,andcampedaroundme.Thestrangenessofwhatwewereabouttodo,theunearthlinessofit,overwhelmedme.Iwaslikeamanawakenedoutofpleasantdreamstothemosthorriblesurroundings.Ilay,eyeswideopen,andthesphereseemedtogetmoreflimsyandfeeble,andCavormoreunrealandfantastic,andthewholeenterprisemadderandmaddereverymoment.
