“Thebig-headedSelenitesittingbesideme,seeingmemovemyheadwiththegestureofonewhosaw,pointedwithhistrunk-like‘hand’andindicatedasortofjettycomingintosightveryfarbelow:alittlelanding-stage,asitwere,hangingintothevoid.Asitsweptuptowardsusourpacediminishedveryrapidly,andinafewmoments,asitseemed,wewereabreastofit,andatrest.Amooring-ropewasflungandgrasped,andIfoundmyselfpulleddowntoalevelwithagreatcrowdofSelenites,whojostledtoseeme.
“Itwasanincrediblecrowd.Suddenlyandviolentlytherewasforceduponmyattentionthevastamountofdifferencethereisamongstthesebeingsofthemoon.
“Indeed,thereseemednottwoalikeinallthatjostlingmultitude.Theydifferedinshape,theydifferedinsize,theyrangallthehorriblechangesonthethemeofSeleniteform!Somebulgedandoverhung,someranaboutamongthefeetoftheirfellows.
