Hedoesnotmentiontheant,butthroughouthisallusionstheantiscontinuallybeingbroughtbeforemymind,initssleeplessactivity,initsintelligenceandsocialorganisation,initsstructure,andmoreparticularlyinthefactthatitdisplays,inadditiontothetwoforms,themaleandthefemaleform,thatalmostallotheranimalspossess,anumberofothersexlesscreatures,workers,soldiers,andthelike,differingfromoneanotherinstructure,character,power,anduse,andyetallmembersofthesamespecies.FortheseSelenites,also,haveagreatvarietyofforms.Ofcourse,theyarenotonlycolossallygreaterinsizethanants,butalso,inCavor’sopinionatleast,inintelligence,morality,andsocialwisdomaretheycolossallygreaterthanmen.Andinsteadofthefourorfivedifferentformsofantthatarefound,therearealmostinnumerablydifferentformsofSelenite.IhadendeavouredtoindicatetheveryconsiderabledifferenceobservableinsuchSelenitesoftheoutercrustasIhappenedtoencounter;thedifferencesinsizeandproportionswerecertainlyaswideasthedifferencesbetweenthemostwidelyseparatedracesofmen.ButsuchdifferencesasIsawfadeabsolutelytonothingincomparisonwiththehugedistinctionsofwhichCavortells.
