           WhenindeedItookmyplaceintheworld,howamazedtheworldwouldbe!

           IsatdowntoanEnglishbreakfastandatewithasortoflanguidappetite—anappetitemanyweeksoldandverydecrepit—andstirredmyselftoanswerthequestionsofthefouryoungmen.AndItoldthemthetruth.

           “Well,”saidI,“asyoupressme—Igotitinthemoon.”

           “Themoon?”

           “Yes,themooninthesky.”

           “Buthowdoyoumean?”

           “WhatIsay,confoundit!”

           “Thenyouhavejustcomefromthemoon?”

           “Exactly!throughspace—inthatball.”AndItookadeliciousmouthfulofegg.ImadeaprivatenotethatwhenIwentbacktothemoonIwouldtakeaboxofeggs.

           IcouldseeclearlythattheydidnotbelieveonewordofwhatItoldthem,butevidentlytheyconsideredmethemostrespectableliartheyhadevermet.Theyglancedatoneanother,andthenconcentratedthefireoftheireyesonme.IfancytheyexpectedacluetomeinthewayIhelpedmyselftosalt.Theyseemedtofindsomethingsignificantinmypepperingmyegg.
