           Ican’tprofesstoexplainthethingsthathappenedinmymind.NodoubttheycouldallbetraceddirectlyorindirectlytothecuriousphysicalconditionsunderwhichIwasliving.Isetthemdownherejustforwhattheyareworth,andwithoutanycomment.Themostprominentqualityofitwasapervadingdoubtofmyownidentity.Ibecame,ifImaysoexpressit,dissociatefromBedford;IlookeddownonBedfordasatrivial,incidentalthingwithwhichIchancedtobeconnected.IsawBedfordinmanyrelations—asanassorasapoorbeast,whereIhadhithertobeeninclinedtoregardhimwithaquietprideasaveryspiritedorratherforcibleperson.Isawhimnotonlyasanass,butasthesonofmanygenerationsofasses.Ireviewedhisschool-daysandhisearlymanhood,andhisfirstencounterwithlove,verymuchasonemightreviewtheproceedingsofanantinthesand.SomethingofthatperiodoflucidityIregretstillhangsaboutme,andIdoubtifIshalleverrecoverthefull-bodiedselfsatisfactionofmyearlydays.Butatthetimethethingwasnotintheleastpainful,becauseIhadthatextraordinarypersuasionthat,asamatteroffact,IwasnomoreBedfordthanIwasanyoneelse,butonlyamindfloatinginthestillserenityofspace.WhyshouldIbedisturbedaboutthisBedford’sshortcomings?Iwasnotresponsibleforhimorthem.
