Downthereitwas,inablueglowthatnowinourmemoriesseemedthenextthingtoabsolutedarkness,wehadmetwiththingslikemadmockeriesofmen,helmet-headedcreatures,andhadwalkedinfearbeforethem,andhadsubmittedtothemuntilwecouldsubmitnolonger.Andbehold,theyhadsmashedlikewaxandscatteredlikechaff,andfledandvanishedlikethecreaturesofadream!
Irubbedmyeyes,doubtingwhetherwehadnotsleptanddreamtthesethingsbyreasonofthefunguswehadeaten,andsuddenlydiscoveredtheblooduponmyface,andthenthatmyshirtwasstickingpainfullytomyshoulderandarm.
“Confoundit!”Isaid,gaugingmyinjurieswithaninvestigatoryhand,andsuddenlythatdistanttunnelmouthbecame,asitwere,awatchingeye.
“Cavor!”Isaid;“whataretheygoingtodonow?Andwhatarewegoingtodo?”

“Yetafterall,”Isaid,“evenifwedon’tfindthesphereatonce,thereisachanceforus.Wemightholdout.Eventhroughthenight.Wemightgodownthereagainandmakeafightforit.”
