Inanyby-timeAlanmustteachmetousemysword,formyignorancehadmuchdistressedhim;andIthinkbesides,asIhadsometimestheupper-handofhiminthefishing,hewasnotsorrytoturntoanexercisewherehehadsomuchtheupper-handofme.Hemadeitsomewhatmoreofapainthanneedhavebeen,forhestormedatmeallthroughthelessonsinaveryviolentmannerofscolding,andwouldpushmesoclosethatImadesurehemustrunmethroughthebody.Iwasoftentemptedtoturntail,butheldmygroundforallthat,andgotsomeprofitofmylessons;ifitwasbuttostandonguardwithanassuredcountenance,whichisoftenallthatisrequired.So,thoughIcouldneverintheleastpleasemymaster,Iwasnotaltogetherdispleasedwithmyself.
