           ThediseaseoftheladyMadelinehadlongbaffledtheskillofherphysicians. Asettledapathy,agradualwastingawayoftheperson,andfrequentalthoughtransientaffectionsofapartiallycatalepticalcharacterweretheunusualdiagnosis. Hithertoshehadsteadilyborneupagainstthepressureofhermalady,andhadnotbetakenherselffinallytobed;butontheclosinginoftheeveningofmyarrivalatthehouse,shesuccumbed(asherbrothertoldmeatnightwithinexpressibleagitation)totheprostratingpowerofthedestroyer; andIlearnedthattheglimpseIhadobtainedofherpersonwouldthusprobablybethelastIshouldobtainthatthelady,atleastwhileliving,wouldbeseenbymenomore.
