ItisintheinteriorofAfrica,intheprosecutionofthosebloodywars,wagedbytheAfricanchiefsamongthemselvesforthisman-hunt,thatentiretribesarereducedtoslavery.Twooppositedirectionsarethengiventothecaravans:onetothewest,towardthePortuguesecolonyofAngola;theothertotheeast,ontheMozambique.Oftheseunfortunatebeings,ofwhomonlyasmallportionarriveattheirdestination,someareexported,itmaybetoCuba,itmaybetoMadagascar;otherstotheAraborTurkishprovincesofAsia,toMecca,ortoMuscat.TheEnglishandFrenchcruiserscanonlypreventthistraffictoasmallextent,asitissodifficulttoobtainaneffectivesurveillanceoversuchfar-extendedcoasts.
Butthefiguresoftheseodiousexportations,aretheystillconsiderable?
Yes!Thenumberofslaveswhoarriveatthecoastisestimatedatnotlessthaneightythousand;andthisnumber,itappears,onlyrepresentsthetenthofnativesmassacred.
Afterthesedreadfulbutcheriesthedevastatedfieldsaredeserted,theburntvillagesarewithoutinhabitants,theriverscarrydowndeadbodies,deeroccupythecountry.
