           Buttherainwasthewind,andinfact,atthatdate,thebreezefreshenedsomuchthattheairwasdisplacedwithavelocityofsixtyfeetasecond,saythirty-onemilesanhour.

           DickSandwasobligedtotakesomeprecautionssoasnottoriskthe

           "Pilgrim’s"mastingandsails.

           Alreadyhehadtheroyal,thefore-staff,andtheflying-jibtakenin,andheresolvedtodothesamewiththetop-sail,thentakeintworeefsinthetop-sail.

           Thislastoperationmustpresentcertaindifficultieswithacrewoflittleexperience.Hesitationwouldnotdo,however,andnoonehesitated.
