Acertainvenomousspider,the"katipo,"oftheMaoris,whosebiteisoftenfataltothenatives,hadbeenveryhighlyrecommendedtohim.Butaspiderdoesnotbelongtotheorderofinsectsproperlysocalled;itisplacedinthatofthearachnida,and,consequently,wasvaluelessinCousinBenedict’seyes.Thushescornedit,andthemostbeautifuljewelofhiscollectionwasaremarkablestaphylinfromNewZealand.
ItisneedlesstosaythatCousinBenedict,bypayingaheavypremium,hadinsuredhiscargo,whichtohimseemedmuchmorepreciousthanallthefreightofoilandbonesstowedawayintheholdofthe"Pilgrim."
Justasthe"Pilgrim"wasgettingundersail,whenMrs.Weldonandhercompanionforthevoyagefoundthemselvesonthedeckoftheschooner,CaptainHullapproachedhispassenger:
"Itisunderstood,Mrs.Weldon,"hesaidtoher,"that,ifyoutakepassageonboardthe’Pilgrim,’itisonyourownresponsibility."
"Whydoyoumakethatobservationtome,Mr.Hull?"askedMrs.Weldon.
"BecauseIhavenotreceivedanorderfromyourhusbandinregardtoit,and,allthingsconsidered,aschoonercannotofferyoutheguaranteesofagoodpassage,likeapacket-boat,speciallyintendedtocarrytravelers."
