Andnowallwillbetoldaboutthisoriginalwhenitisstated,thatitwasonaccountofhispassionforentomologythathehadaccompaniedMr.andMrs.WeldontoNewZealand.Therehiscollectionwasenrichedbysomeraresubjects,anditwillbereadilyunderstoodthathewasinhastetoreturntoclassifytheminthecasesofhiscabinetinSanFrancisco.
So,asMrs.WeldonandherchildwerereturningtoAmericabythe"Pilgrim,"nothingmorenaturalthanforCousinBenedicttoaccompanythemduringthatpassage.
ButitwasnotonhimthatMrs.Weldoncouldrely,ifsheshouldeverfindherselfinanycriticalsituation.Veryfortunately,theprospectwasonlythatofavoyageeasilymadeduringthefineseason,andonboardofashipwhosecaptainmeritedallherconfidence.
Duringthethreedaysthatthe"Pilgrim"wasinportatWaitemata,Mrs.Weldonmadeherpreparationsingreathaste,forshedidnotwishtodelaythedepartureoftheschooner.ThenativeservantswhomsheemployedinherdwellinginAucklandweredismissed,and,onthe22dJanuary,sheembarkedonboardthe"Pilgrim,"bringingonlyhersonJack,CousinBenedict,andNan,heroldnegress.
CousinBenedictcarriedallhiscuriouscollectionofinsectsinaspecialbox.Inthiscollectionfigured,amongothers,somespecimensofthosenewstaphylins,speciesofcarnivorouscoleopters,whoseeyesareplacedabovethehead,andwhich,tillthen,seemedtobepeculiartoNewCaledonia.
