Annewasnowathandtotakeupherowncause,andthesincerityofhermannerbeingsoonsufficienttoconvincehim,whereconvictionwasatleastveryagreeable,hehadnofartherscruplesastoherbeinglefttodinealone,thoughhestillwantedhertojointhemintheevening,whenthechildmightbeatrestforthenight,andkindlyurgedhertolethimcomeandfetchher,butshewasquiteunpersuadable;andthisbeingthecase,shehaderelongthepleasureofseeingthemsetofftogetherinhighspirits.Theyweregone,shehoped,tobehappy,howeveroddlyconstructedsuchhappinessmightseem;asforherself,shewasleftwithasmanysensationsofcomfort,aswere,perhaps,everlikelytobehers.Sheknewherselftobeofthefirstutilitytothechild;andwhatwasittoherifFrederickWentworthwereonlyhalfamiledistant,makinghimselfagreeabletoothers?
