Thenextmomentshewastappingatherhusband’sdressing-roomdoor,andasAnnefollowedherupstairs,shewasintimeforthewholeconversation,whichbeganwithMary’ssaying,inatoneofgreatexultation—
“Imeantogowithyou,Charles,forIamofnomoreuseathomethanyouare.IfIweretoshutmyselfupforeverwiththechild,Ishouldnotbeabletopersuadehimtodoanythinghedidnotlike.Annewillstay;Anneundertakestostayathomeandtakecareofhim.ItisAnne’sownproposal,andsoIshallgowithyou,whichwillbeagreatdealbetter,forIhavenotdinedattheotherhousesinceTuesday.”
“ThisisverykindofAnne,”washerhusband’sanswer,“andIshouldbeverygladtohaveyougo;butitseemsratherhardthatsheshouldbeleftathomebyherself,tonurseoursickchild.
