           EverystepbroughthimnearertoLondon,fartherfromhisownsoberinartisticlife.Alightbegantotrembleonthehorizonofhismind.Hewasnotsooldthirty-two.Histemperamentmightbesaidtobejustatthepointofmaturity.Thereweresomanydifferentmoodsandimpressionsthathewishedtoexpressinverse.Hefeltthemwithinhim.Hetriedweighhissoultoseeifitwasapoet’ssoul.Melancholywasthedominantnoteofhistemperament,hethought,butitwasamelancholytemperedbyrecurrencesoffaithandresignationandsimplejoy.Ifhecouldgiveexpressiontoitinabookofpoemsperhapsmenwouldlisten.Hewouldneverbepopular:hesawthat.Hecouldnotswaythecrowdbuthemightappealtoalittlecircleofkindredminds.TheEnglishcritics,perhaps,wouldrecognisehimasoneoftheCelticschoolbyreasonofthemelancholytoneofhispoems;besidesthat,hewouldputinallusions.Hebegantoinventsentencesandphrasesfromthenoticewhichhisbookwouldget.“Mr.Chandlerhasthegiftofeasyandgracefulverse.”...“wistfulsadnesspervadesthesepoems.”...“TheCelticnote.”ItwasapityhisnamewasnotmoreIrish-looking.
