           “Halftimenow,boys,”heusedtosaylight-heartedly.“Where’smyconsideringcap?”

           ThatwasIgnatiusGallaherallout;and,damnit,youcouldn’tbutadmirehimforit.

           LittleChandlerquickenedhispace.Forthefirsttimeinhislifehefelthimselfsuperiortothepeoplehepassed.ForthefirsttimehissoulrevoltedagainstthedullineleganceofCapelStreet.Therewasnodoubtaboutit:ifyouwantedtosucceedyouhadtogoaway.YoucoulddonothinginDublin.AshecrossedGrattanBridgehelookeddowntherivertowardsthelowerquaysandpitiedthepoorstuntedhouses.Theyseemedtohimabandoftramps,huddledtogetheralongtheriverbanks,theiroldcoatscoveredwithdustandsoot,stupefiedbythepanoramaofsunsetandwaitingforthefirstchillofnightbidthemarise,shakethemselvesandbegone.
