           Hestoodstillinthegloomofthehall,tryingtocatchtheairthatthevoicewassingingandgazingupathiswife.Therewasgraceandmysteryinherattitudeasifshewereasymbolofsomething.Heaskedhimselfwhatisawomanstandingonthestairsintheshadow,listeningtodistantmusic,asymbolof.Ifhewereapainterhewouldpaintherinthatattitude.Herbluefelthatwouldshowoffthebronzeofherhairagainstthedarknessandthedarkpanelsofherskirtwouldshowoffthelightones.DistantMusichewouldcallthepictureifhewereapainter.
