An Encounter

           Hegavemetheimpressionthathewasrepeatingsomethingwhichhehadlearnedbyheartorthat,magnetisedbysomewordsofhisownspeech,hismindwasslowlycirclingroundandroundinthesameorbit.Attimeshespokeasifheweresimplyalludingtosomefactthateverybodyknew,andattimesheloweredhisvoiceandspokemysteriouslyasifheweretellingussomethingsecretwhichhedidnotwishotherstooverhear.Herepeatedhisphrasesoverandoveragain,varyingthemandsurroundingthemwithhismonotonousvoice.Icontinuedtogazetowardsthefootoftheslope,listeningtohim.

           Afteralongwhilehismonologuepaused.Hestoodupslowly,sayingthathehadtoleaveusforaminuteorso,afewminutes,and,withoutchangingthedirectionofmygaze,Isawhimwalkingslowlyawayfromustowardsthenearendofthefield.Weremainedsilentwhenhehadgone.AfterasilenceofafewminutesIheardMahonyexclaim:

           “Isay!Lookwhathe’sdoing!”

           AsIneitheranswerednorraisedmyeyesMahonyexclaimedagain:

           “Isay...He’saqueeroldjosser!”

           “Incaseheasksusforournames,”Isaid“letyoubeMurphyandI’llbeSmith.”

           Wesaidnothingfurthertoeachother.IwasstillconsideringwhetherIwouldgoawayornotwhenthemancamebackandsatdownbesideusagain.HardlyhadhesatdownwhenMahony,catchingsightofthecatwhichhadescapedhim,sprangupandpursuedheracrossthefield.
