           IhadbeeninagonytoobtainsomeknowledgeofthecircumstancesinwhichmyDorawouldbeplacedas,inwhoseguardianship,andsoforthandthiswassomethingtowardsit.Webeganthesearchatonce;Mr.jorkinsunlockingthedrawersanddesks,andwealltakingoutthepapers.Theoffice-papersweplacedononeside,andtheprivatepapers(whichwerenotnumerous)ontheother.Wewereverygrave;andwhenwecametoastrayseal,orpencil-case,orring,oranylittlearticleofthatkindwhichweassociatedpersonallywithhim,wespokeverylow.

           Wehadsealedupseveralpackets;andwerestillgoingondustilyandquietly,whenMr.jorkinssaidtous,applyingexactlythesamewordstohislatepartnerashislatepartnerhadappliedtohim:

           ‘Mr.Spenlowwasverydifficulttomovefromthebeatentrack.Youknowwhathewas!Iamdisposedtothinkhehadmadenowill.’

           ‘Oh,Iknowhehad!’saidI.
