           Shereadit,inthesamestatelyandimpassiveway,untouchedbyitscontents,asfarasIcouldsee,andreturnedittohim.

           ‘“Unlesshebringsmebackalady,”’saidMr.Peggotty,tracingoutthatpartwithhisfinger.‘Icometoknow,ma’am,whetherhewillkeephiswured?’

           ‘No,’shereturned.

           ‘Whynot?’saidMr.Peggotty.

           ‘Itisimpossible.Hewoulddisgracehimself.Youcannotfailtoknowthatsheisfarbelowhim.’

           ‘Raiseherup!’saidMr.Peggotty.

           ‘Sheisuneducatedandignorant.’

           ‘Maybeshe’snot;maybesheis,’saidMr.Peggotty.‘Ithinknot,ma’am;butI’mnojudgeofthemthings.Teachherbetter!’
