           Mr.Spenlowwasasgoodashisword.Inaweekortwo,hereferredtothisengagement,andsaid,thatifIwoulddohimthefavourtocomedownnextSaturday,andstaytillMonday,hewouldbeextremelyhappy.OfcourseIsaidIwoulddohimthefavour;andhewastodrivemedowninhisphaeton,andtobringmeback.

           Whenthedayarrived,myverycarpet-bagwasanobjectofvenerationtothestipendiaryclerks,towhomthehouseatNorwoodwasasacredmystery.OneoftheminformedmethathehadheardthatMr.Spenlowateentirelyoffplateandchina;andanotherhintedatchampagnebeingconstantlyondraught,aftertheusualcustomoftable-beer.Theoldclerkwiththewig,whosenamewasMr.Tiffey,hadbeendownonbusinessseveraltimesinthecourseofhiscareer,andhadoneachoccasionpenetratedtothebreakfast-parlour.
