           Ihadnottheleastbelief,intheoutsetofthisstory,thattheunknownwasanythingbutadelusionofMr.Dick’s,andoneofthelineofthatill-fatedPrincewhooccasionedhimsomuchdifficulty;butaftersomereflectionIbegantoentertainthequestionwhetheranattempt,orthreatofanattempt,mighthavebeentwicemadetotakepoorMr.Dickhimselffromundermyaunt’sprotection,andwhethermyaunt,thestrengthofwhosekindfeelingtowardshimIknewfromherself,mighthavebeeninducedtopayapriceforhispeaceandquiet.AsIwasalreadymuchattachedtoMr.Dick,andverysolicitousforhiswelfare,myfearsfavouredthissupposition;andforalongtimehisWednesdayhardlyevercameround,withoutmyentertainingamisgivingthathewouldnotbeonthecoach-boxasusual.Therehealwaysappeared,however,grey-headed,laughing,andhappy;andheneverhadanythingmoretotellofthemanwhocouldfrightenmyaunt.

           TheseWednesdayswerethehappiestdaysofMr.Dick’slife;theywerefarfrombeingtheleasthappyofmine.Hesoonbecameknowntoeveryboyintheschool;andthoughhenevertookanactivepartinanygamebutkite-flying,wasasdeeplyinterestedinalloursportsasanyoneamongus.
