‘ClaraPeggotty,’Ianswered.
‘WhatnamewoulditbeasIshouldwriteupnow,iftherewasatilthere?’
‘ClaraPeggotty,again?’Isuggested.
‘ClaraPeggottyBARKIS!’hereturned,andburstintoaroaroflaughterthatshookthechaise.
Inaword,theyweremarried,andhadgoneintothechurchfornootherpurpose.Peggottywasresolvedthatitshouldbequietlydone;andtheclerkhadgivenheraway,andtherehadbeennowitnessesoftheceremony.ShewasalittleconfusedwhenMr.Barkismadethisabruptannouncementoftheirunion,andcouldnothugmeenoughintokenofherunimpairedaffection;butshesoonbecameherselfagain,andsaidshewasverygladitwasover.
