           Peggottywasdressedasusual,inherneatandquietmourning;butMr.Barkisbloomedinanewbluecoat,ofwhichthetailorhadgivenhimsuchgoodmeasure,thatthecuffswouldhaverenderedglovesunnecessaryinthecoldestweather,whilethecollarwassohighthatitpushedhishairuponendonthetopofhishead.Hisbrightbuttons,too,wereofthelargestsize.Renderedcompletebydrabpantaloonsandabuffwaistcoat,IthoughtMr.Barkisaphenomenonofrespectability.

           Whenwewereallinabustleoutsidethedoor,IfoundthatMr.Peggottywaspreparedwithanoldshoe,whichwastobethrownafterusforluck,andwhichheofferedtoMrs.Gummidgeforthatpurpose.

           ‘No.Ithadbetterbedonebysomebodyelse,Dan’l,’saidMrs.Gummidge.‘I’malonelorncreetur’myself,andeverythinkthatremindsmeofcreetur’sthatain’tloneandlorn,goescontrarywithme.’

           ‘Come,oldgal!’criedMr.Peggotty.‘Takeandheaveit.’

           ‘No,Dan’l,’returnedMrs.Gummidge,whimperingandshakingherhead.‘IfIfeltless,Icoulddomore.
