Astheacutenessofthisremorsebegantodieaway,itwassucceededbyasenseofjoy. Theproblemofmyconductwassolved. Hydewasthenceforthimpossible;whetherIwouldornot,Iwasnowconfinedtothebetterpartofmyexistence;andoh,howIrejoicedtothinkit! withwhatwillinghumility,Iembracedanewtherestrictionsofnaturallife! withwhatsincererenunciation,IlockedthedoorbywhichIhadsooftengoneandcome,andgroundthekeyundermyheel!
Thenextday,camethenewsthatthemurderhadbeenoverlooked,thattheguiltofHydewaspatenttotheworld,andthatthevictimwasamanhighinpublicestimation. Itwasnotonlyacrime,ithadbeenatragicfolly.
