           “Youareverygood,”sighedtheother. “Ishouldliketoverymuch;butno,no,no,itisquiteimpossible;Idarenot. Butindeed,Utterson,Iamverygladtoseeyou; thisisreallyagreatpleasure;IwouldaskyouandMr.Enfieldup,buttheplaceisreallynotfit.” 

           “Whythen,”saidthelawyer,good-naturedly,“thebestthingwecandoistostaydownhereandspeakwithyoufromwhereweare.” 

           “Theysawitbutforaglimpse” 

           “ThatisjustwhatIwasabouttoventuretopropose,”returnedthedoctorwithasmile. Butthewordswerehardlyuttered,beforethesmilewasstruckoutofhisfaceandsucceededbyanexpressionofsuchabjectterroranddespair,asfrozetheverybloodofthetwogentlemenbelow. Theysawitbutforaglimpse,forthewindowwasinstantlythrustdown;butthatglimpsehadbeensufficient,andtheyturnedandleftthecourtwithoutaword. Insilence,too,theytraversedtheby-street;anditwasnotuntiltheyhadcomeintoaneighbouringthoroughfare,whereevenuponaSundaytherewerestillsomestirringsoflife,thatMr.Uttersonatlastturnedandlookedathiscompanion. Theywerebothpale;andtherewasanansweringhorrorintheireyes.
