           Atlengthasthecraftwascasttooneside,andranrangingalongwiththeWhiteWhale’sflank,heseemedstrangelyobliviousofitsadvanceasthewhalesometimeswillandAhabwasfairlywithinthesmokymountainmist,which,thrownofffromthewhale’sspout,curledroundhisgreatMonadnockhump;hewaseventhusclosetohim;when,withbodyarchedback,andbotharmslengthwisehigh-liftedtothepoise,hedartedhisfierceiron,andhisfarfiercercurseintothehatedwhale.Asbothsteelandcursesanktothesocket,asifsuckedintoamorass,MobyDicksidewisewrithed;spasmodicallyrolledhisnighflankagainstthebow,and,withoutstavingaholeinit,sosuddenlycantedtheboatover,thathaditnotbeenfortheelevatedpartofthegunwaletowhichhethenclung,Ahabwouldoncemorehavebeentossedintothesea.Asitwas,threeoftheoarsmenwhoforeknewnotthepreciseinstantofthedart,andwerethereforeunpreparedforitseffectsthesewereflungout;butsofell,that,inaninstanttwoofthemclutchedthegunwaleagain,andrisingtoitslevelonacombingwave,hurledthemselvesbodilyinboardagain;thethirdmanhelplesslydroppingastern,butstillafloatandswimming.

           Almostsimultaneously,withamightyvolitionofungraduated,instantaneousswiftness,theWhiteWhaledartedthroughthewelteringsea.
