           Whetherfaggedbythethreedays’runningchase,andtheresistancetohisswimmingintheknottedhamperhebore;orwhetheritwassomelatentdeceitfulnessandmaliceinhim:whicheverwastrue,theWhiteWhale’swaynowbegantoabate,asitseemed,fromtheboatsorapidlynearinghimoncemore;thoughindeedthewhale’slaststarthadnotbeensolongaoneasbefore.AndstillasAhabglidedoverthewavestheunpityingsharksaccompaniedhim;andsopertinaciouslystucktotheboat;andsocontinuallybitattheplyingoars,thatthebladesbecamejaggedandcrunched,andleftsmallsplintersinthesea,atalmosteverydip.

           "Heedthemnot!thoseteethbutgivenewrowlockstoyouroars.Pullon!‘tisthebetterrest,thesharks’jawthantheyieldingwater."

           "Butateverybite,sir,thethinbladesgrowsmallerandsmaller!"

           "Theywilllastlongenough!pullon!Butwhocantell"—hemuttered—"whetherthesesharksswimtofeastonthewhaleoronAhab?Butpullon!Aye,allalive,nowwenearhim.Thehelm!takethehelm!letmepass,"—andsosayingtwooftheoarsmenhelpedhimforwardtothebowsofthestillflyingboat.
