           Shefoundithardertobearthantheothersbecauseshecouldrememberatimewhenhomewasbeautiful,lifefullofeaseandpleasure,andwantofanykindunknown.Shetriednottobeenviousordiscontented,butitwasverynaturalthattheyounggirlshouldlongforprettythings,gayfriends,accomplishments,andahappylife.AttheKings’shedailysawallshewanted,forthechildren’soldersisterswerejustout,andMegcaughtfrequentglimpsesofdaintyballdressesandbouquets,heardlivelygossipabouttheaters,concerts,sleighingparties,andmerrymakingsofallkinds,andsawmoneylavishedontrifleswhichwouldhavebeensoprecioustoher.PoorMegseldomcomplained,butasenseofinjusticemadeherfeelbittertowardeveryonesometimes,forshehadnotyetlearnedtoknowhowrichshewasintheblessingswhichalonecanmakelifehappy.

           JohappenedtosuitAuntMarch,whowaslameandneededanactivepersontowaituponher.Thechildlessoldladyhadofferedtoadoptoneofthegirlswhenthetroublescame,andwasmuchoffendedbecauseherofferwasdeclined.OtherfriendstoldtheMarchesthattheyhadlostallchanceofbeingrememberedinthericholdlady’swill,buttheunworldlyMarchesonlysaid...

           "Wecan’tgiveupourgirlsforadozenfortunes.Richorpoor,wewillkeeptogetherandbehappyinoneanother."

           Theoldladywouldn’tspeaktothemforatime,buthappeningtomeetJoatafriend’s,somethinginhercomicalfaceandbluntmannersstrucktheoldlady’sfancy,andsheproposedtotakeherforacompanion.
