           TheMoffatswereveryfashionable,andsimpleMegwasratherdaunted,atfirst,bythesplendorofthehouseandtheeleganceofitsoccupants.Buttheywerekindlypeople,inspiteofthefrivolouslifetheyled,andsoonputtheirguestatherease.PerhapsMegfelt,withoutunderstandingwhy,thattheywerenotparticularlycultivatedorintelligentpeople,andthatalltheirgildingcouldnotquiteconcealtheordinarymaterialofwhichtheyweremade.Itcertainlywasagreeabletofaresumptuously,driveinafinecarriage,wearherbestfrockeveryday,anddonothingbutenjoyherself.Itsuitedherexactly,andsoonshebegantoimitatethemannersandconversationofthoseabouther,toputonlittleairsandgraces,useFrenchphrases,crimpherhair,takeinherdresses,andtalkaboutthefashionsaswellasshecould.ThemoreshesawofAnnieMoffat’sprettythings,themoresheenviedherandsighedtoberich.Homenowlookedbareanddismalasshethoughtofit,workgrewharderthanever,andshefeltthatshewasaverydestituteandmuch-injuredgirl,inspiteofthenewglovesandsilkstockings.

           Shehadnotmuchtimeforrepining,however,forthethreeyounggirlswerebusilyemployedin‘havingagoodtime’.
