           ‘DoInot?’hesaidslowly,gasping,asifthewordshadbeentornoutofhimbyasupernaturalpower.

           "Ipulledthestringofthewhistle,andIdidthisbecauseIsawthepilgrimsondeckgettingouttheirrifleswithanairofanticipatingajollylark.Atthesuddenscreechtherewasamovementofabjectterrorthroughthatwedgedmassofbodies.‘Don’t!don’tyoufrightenthemaway,’criedsomeoneondeckdisconsolately.Ipulledthestringtimeaftertime.Theybrokeandran,theyleaped,theycrouched,theyswerved,theydodgedtheflyingterrorofthesound.Thethreeredchapshadfallenflat,facedownontheshore,asthoughtheyhadbeenshotdead.Onlythebarbarousandsuperbwomandidnotsomuchasflinch,andstretchedtragicallyherbarearmsafterusoverthesombreandglitteringriver.
