Isteamedupabit,thenswungdownstream,andtwothousandeyesfollowedtheevolutionsofthesplashing,thumping,fierceriver-demonbeatingthewaterwithitsterribletailandbreathingblacksmokeintotheair.Infrontofthefirstrank,alongtheriver,threemen,plasteredwithbrightredearthfromheadtofoot,struttedtoandfrorestlessly.Whenwecameabreastagain,theyfacedtheriver,stampedtheirfeet,noddedtheirhornedheads,swayedtheirscarletbodies;theyshooktowardsthefierceriver-demonabunchofblackfeathers,amangyskinwithapendenttail—somethingthatlookedadriedgourd;theyshoutedperiodicallytogetherstringsofamazingwordsthatresemblednosoundsofhumanlanguage;andthedeepmurmursofthecrowd,interruptedsuddenly,wereliketheresponsesofsomesataniclitany.
