           Sittingintheboat,hebowed,hecrouchedhimself,actinginstantlyhispartthepartofadesolateman,widowed,bereft;andsocalledupbeforehiminhostspeoplesympathisingwithhim;stagedforhimselfashesatintheboat,alittledrama;whichrequiredofhimdecrepitudeandexhaustionandsorrow(heraisedhishandsandlookedatthethinnessofthem,toconfirmhisdream)andthentherewasgivenhiminabundancewomen’ssympathy,andheimaginedhowtheywouldsoothehimandsympathisewithhim,andsogettinginhisdreamsomereflectionoftheexquisitepleasurewomen’ssympathywastohim,hesighedandsaidgentlyandmournfully,

           ButIbeneatharoughersea

           Waswhelmedindeepergulfsthanhe,

           ButCamcouldseenothing.Shewasthinkinghowallthosepathsandthelawn,thickandknottedwiththelivestheyhadlivedthere,weregone:wererubbedout;werepast;wereunreal,andnowthiswasreal;theboatandthesailwithitspatch;Macalisterwithhisearrings;thenoiseofthewavesallthiswasreal.
