           Wherearewegoing?andthemovementhypnotisedher,whileJames,withhiseyefixedonthesailandonthehorizon,steeredgrimly.Buthebegantothinkashesteeredthathemightescape;hemightbequitofitall.Theymightlandsomewhere;andbefreethen.Bothofthem,lookingateachotherforamoment,hadasenseofescapeandexaltation,whatwiththespeedandthechange.ButthebreezebredinMr.Ramsaytoothesameexcitement,and,asoldMacalisterturnedtoflinghislineoverboard,hecriedoutaloud,

           "Weperished,"andthenagain,"eachalone."Andthenwithhisusualspasmofrepentanceorshyness,pulledhimselfup,andwavedhishandtowardstheshore.

           "Seethelittlehouse,"hesaidpointing,wishingCamtolook.Sheraisedherselfreluctantlyandlooked.Butwhichwasit?Shecouldnolongermakeout,thereonthehillside,whichwastheirhouse.Alllookeddistantandpeacefulandstrange.Theshoreseemedrefined,faraway,unreal.Alreadythelittledistancetheyhadsailedhadputthemfarfromitandgivenitthechangedlook,thecomposedlook,ofsomethingrecedinginwhichonehasnolongeranypart.Whichwastheirhouse?Shecouldnotseeit.

           "ButIbeneatharoughersea,"Mr.Ramsaymurmured.Hehadfoundthehouseandsoseeingit,hehadalsoseenhimselfthere;hehadseenhimselfwalkingontheterrace,alone.Hewaswalkingupanddownbetweentheurns;andheseemedtohimselfveryoldandbowed.
