Thecastingwastotakeplaceattwelveo’clockprecisely.Thepreviouseveningeachfurnacehadbeenchargedwith114,000poundsweightofmetalinbarsdisposedcross-waystoeachother,soastoallowthehotairtocirculatefreelybetweenthem.Atdaybreakthe1,200chimneysvomitedtheirtorrentsofflameintotheair,andthegroundwasagitatedwithdulltremblings.Asmanypoundsofmetalasthereweretocast,somanypoundsofcoalweretheretoburn.Thustherewere68,000tonsofcoalwhichprojectedinthefaceofthesunathickcurtainofsmoke.Theheatsoonbecameinsupportablewithinthecircleoffurnaces,therumblingofwhichresembledtherollingofthunder.Thepowerfulventilatorsaddedtheircontinuousblastsandsaturatedwithoxygentheglowingplates.Theoperation,tobesuccessful,requiredtobeconductedwithgreatrapidity.
